How to meditate with a candle? How to use a candle for meditation?

The Candle Meditation Technique

Meditation is used to help you clear your mind and increase your ability to focus.

One way to do this is by lighting a candle and focusing on the flame.

Many people find it much easier to meditate when focusing on an object, like a candle. Candles can also help create a relaxing atmosphere.

The steps are pretty easy, to sum them up…
1. Choose a candle

2. Create a relaxing environment

3. Position the candle for meditation

4. Light the candle

5. Begin to clear your mind and focus on the flame

A candle meditation is practised by gazing at a candle flame.
It can sometimes be tricky to keep your eyes open and focus on a candle without them blinking or watering.

This meditation is an amazing way to improve your concentration skills.

The candle meditation session usually lasts from 15 to 30 minutes.

Before you start your candle meditation

Select a non-toxic candle

Many candles are made from toxic chemicals, such as paraffin wax.

As they release harmful vapours while the candle is lit, they should not be used for candle meditation.

You should select a candle made from a non-toxic or natural substance, such as beeswax or soy wax.

Choose the colour of your candle carefully

While meditating you will be looking at and focusing on the candle. Certain colours can have symbolic meanings and release different energies.

Choose a white, blue, or purple candle for spirituality

If you want to meditate for protection, purification, inner peace, spirituality, or intuition, you should use a white, blue, or purple candle.

At Frændi, we think uncoloured and natural candles are the best. That’s why our meditation candle is white, from the natural colour of soy wax.

Choose a red or pink candle for love, passion, and power

If you want to focus your meditation session on love, romance, passion, power, or happiness, you should use a red or pink candle.

Select a green candle for fertility and wealth

Perhaps you want to use your meditation session to focus on prosperity and wealth.

If this is the case then you should use a green candle. Green candles can also be used for fertility.

Avoid scented candles

Determine if you want a scented candle or not. However, be aware that scented candles create allergies and are toxic.

How to do the Candle Meditation

Create a relaxing environment

Before lighting a candle for meditation, prepare your meditation space (light, temperature…).

Choose a quiet room. Pick a room that is free of household traffic and loud noises.

Place the candle

Light the candle and simply stare at the candle and allow the image of the flame to occupy your mind.

Place the candle at eye level and keep your eyes open and look at the candle.

For maximum comfort, the candle should be positioned at eye levels you do not have to strain your neck to look up or down at the candle.

Tip: A great way to deepen a candle meditation is to imagine that you are breathing the light of the candle in and out of yourself.

Gradually, more and more of your peripheral vision fades away until you have no visual awareness of anything but the candle flame.

This is a profound experience. Your eyes are open, but you are actually not seeing anything but the small flame in front of you. As a result, it feels as though there is no distance between yourself and the flame. In essence, you have become one with the flame. To achieve this requires both mental stillness and the physical stillness of your eyes.

As soon as you move your eyes around, your brain is flooded with new sensory input and you will instantly be able to see the room around you again.

Remain still and focus on the candle, and you will slip back into this state of profoundly deep meditation quite quickly.

At the end of your candle meditation, close your eyes and lie down for at least five minutes as you let your body and mind come back down to earth.

  • Thanks for sharing! I personally enjoy using scented candles for meditation, but I don’t have any allergies (that I know about). You can also find candles with natural fragrances that avoid any of the nasty chemicals :)
