What is soy wax?

Soy wax is a natural and vegetal wax made from oil extracted from soybeans.

It is typically softer than paraffin, burns more slowly (longer!), and with a lower melting temperature.

How is soy wax produced?

The soybeans are first harvested before being cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes.

The soybeans oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated.

This process alters the melting point of the oil, making it solid at room temperature.

The leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed. The U.S. grows the vast majority of the world's soybeans, primarily in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.

How is soy wax used?

Soy wax is used by candle makers to make vegan-friendly candles.

Soy wax

Soy wax is usually used for container candles as it’s melting point is lower than other waxes. The melting point of soy wax ranges from 70 to 90 C° (160 to 200 F°).

What are the benefits of soy wax in candle-making?

Soy wax is completely renewable and vegan. Also, a well-made soy wax candle burns cleanly and slowly. Soy wax candles are non-toxic, burn 50% longer and they burn cleaner than paraffin wax! They are:
  • Eco-friendly
  • Renewable
  • Sustainable
  • Carbon neutral
  • Vegan…
